If you drive route 460 from Vigeland to Spangereid (Lindesnes), you'll pass Svennevik. This photo was taken to show the boathouses which are typical of Sørlandet (the "South Country" between Risør and Flekkefjord). On this particular coast the difference between high and low tide is less than a quarter of a meter. Another fact is that the water in these shallow fjords and inside the archipelagos often freezes over in winter *). The boathouses are made so that the boats slide into them and then they are hoisted up to a safe distance from the water – in the autumn. Well, the single boat in this picture seems to be one size too large – and winter is still far off ...

*) While the fjords and coastal waters on the south coast are shallow, the fjords on the west coast are generally very deep. Also, the difference between high and low tide is much larger on the west coast, on the average 0.9 meters in Bergen and increasing to 2.17 meters in Vadsø in the far north. Most fjords on the west coast never freeze over.
