The much longer U.S. Route 666 through New Mexico, Colorado and Utah ("Devil's Highway") got a new number in 2004 because of superstition and many unfortunate incidents – including frequent stealing of road signs. As you know, 666 is the number of the Beast, see Rev.13:18.
